Wolverhampton Wanderers have been relegated from the Premier League after an eight-year stay, following West Ham United’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Monday night.
The result confirmed Wolves’ fate after their 3-0 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday, leaving them mathematically unable to escape the bottom three.
Rob Edwards’ side remain on 17 points with five games left, meaning their maximum possible total of 32 points falls short of West Ham’s 33 points in 17th place.
Wolves’ relegation follows a difficult campaign in which they managed just three wins and eight draws in 33 matches, losing 22 times. The club endured a historically poor start, collecting only two points from their first 18 games and waiting until their 20th match for a first league victory.
The season was further impacted by the departure of key players including Matheus Cunha, and Rayan Aït-Nouri while defensive struggles saw the team fail to keep a clean sheet in the first half of the season.
Managerial changes also defined the campaign, with Vítor Pereira starting the season in charge before being replaced by Edwards in November.
Despite a brief improvement after the new year, including wins against Aston Villa and Liverpool, Wolves were unable to recover from their early struggles.
Edwards acknowledged the disappointment, stating the club would work to secure an immediate return to the top flight.
“It’s obviously been a long time coming, and our situation has been difficult for all of this season,” he said. “All I can do is promise that we’re working extremely hard to make sure that we’re not feeling like this again.”
Club executive Nathan Shi also admitted the outcome was disappointing and pledged to rebuild, assuring fans that efforts are underway to strengthen the team and restore competitiveness.
Wolves will now return to the Championship for the first time since the 2017–18 season.
