Tropical Storm Helene Weakens Over Georgia, Death Toll Rises to Three

Hurricane Helene has downgraded to a tropical storm over Georgia, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm, now moving further inland, was located around 40 miles east of Macon and 100 miles southeast of Atlanta, traveling north at 30 mph as of 5 a.m.

After making landfall Thursday night in Florida’s Big Bend as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, Helene brought dangerous winds, heavy rain, and warnings of a severe storm surge across the southeastern U.S.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp confirmed that two fatalities occurred in south Georgia overnight, bringing the total death toll to three. A potential tornado struck a mobile home in Wheeler County, about 70 miles southeast of Macon, causing the fatalities.

Helene is expected to continue weakening as it moves through Georgia toward the Tennessee-North Carolina border, with tropical storm warnings still in effect. Sustained winds dropped to 90 mph, with further weakening expected throughout Friday.
