NYC Mayor Eric Adams Faces Calls to Resign

New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on federal charges Thursday, accused of accepting bribes and illegal campaign contributions from foreign sources.

According to the indictment from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, Adams allegedly “compounded his gains” by exploiting the city’s matching funds program, which amplifies small-dollar donations. The indictment claims Adams unlawfully benefited from this program and will be arraigned on Friday.

Following the indictment’s release, reactions came from various local and national leaders.

Gov. Kathy Hochul urges Mayor Adams to find a path forward:
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who holds the authority to remove Adams from office, issued a statement calling it a “difficult day for New York City.” While she stopped short of asking for his resignation, she stated, “It’s up to Mayor Adams to show the City that he can still lead.” Hochul emphasized the need for strong leadership and expects Adams to assess the situation and determine an appropriate course of action.

Adams vows to continue his role:
In response, Adams stated that his legal team would handle the case, while he would continue managing the city. “My day-to-day responsibilities remain unchanged,” he said.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams stands ready:
If Adams were to step down, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who would temporarily assume the mayoral duties, would then organize a special election. While Williams emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence, he noted he is preparing for “every eventuality.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reacts:
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer commented, “No one is above the law, including the Mayor of New York City.” Schumer urged that the legal process proceed swiftly and fairly, acknowledging the gravity of the charges.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams: Cautious Approach:
Adrienne Adams, the Speaker of the New York City Council, said she has not yet considered the removal of the mayor, emphasizing the presumption of innocence. However, she urged Mayor Adams to reflect on whether he can fully focus on leading the city during this challenging time.

Brooklyn leaders call for resignation:
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Councilman Chi Osse are calling on Adams to resign. Reynoso emphasized that Adams should prioritize “New Yorkers first” and recognize his inability to lead while facing these charges.

Eric Adams, before becoming mayor, served as Brooklyn Borough President and represented Brooklyn as a state senator.
