Tinubu Emphasizes Governors’ Role in Nigeria’s Development, Calls for Stronger Collaboration

President Bola Tinubu has underscored the vital role state governors play in shaping Nigeria’s future, emphasizing that their leadership is key to achieving national food security, economic prosperity, and overall growth.

During a New Year meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) in Lagos, the President expressed gratitude for their support and cooperation. He highlighted key areas requiring united efforts, particularly in boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening currency stability.

“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development,” President Tinubu told the governors. He pointed out that while the Federal Government allocates 30 to 35 percent of national revenue, the majority of the resources go to state governments, with agriculture playing a crucial role in leveraging this funding.

Tinubu stressed the importance of collaboration between the federal and state governments to tackle issues like local government autonomy, agricultural growth, and economic stability. He dispelled rumours of discord regarding local government autonomy, emphasizing that no one intended to undermine the local governments.

“We will not fight within us. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. Let’s work together to ensure Nigeria is better off for it,” he said.

The President further encouraged governors to focus on agriculture as a means of achieving economic stability. “We must work harder, grow more, and improve the currency situation,” he added, assuring the governors of his commitment to supporting their efforts.

He also praised the development progress across the states, stating, “There is no state we cannot visit and be proud of its development. Together, we will build a nation we are all proud of.”

Reflecting on his leadership over the past 19 months, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to thrive, citing the resilience and leadership of the administration. He announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of his nationwide tours.

The President also welcomed his recognition as ThisDAY newspaper’s Man of the Year, commending the media outlet for acknowledging his administration’s achievements despite initial skepticism.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor, praised the decision to name Tinubu Man of the Year as a significant endorsement of the government’s policies. He highlighted the successes in agriculture, citing a bumper harvest in Jigawa and the efforts to store surplus stock for future use.

Governor Abdulrazak assured the President of the governors’ unwavering support, particularly in enhancing national security through strengthened local security structures. He concluded by noting the progress his state had made, achieving more in two years than during his first term.

“We are getting more funding due to the restructuring of the economy. Yes, inflation exists, but we are overcoming it,” he said.
