President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The development was announced in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President. The appointment takes immediate effect.
According to the statement, Egbetokun tendered his resignation earlier on Tuesday, with the President commending his years of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.
“President Tinubu received Mr Egbetokun’s resignation earlier today and expressed his profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation,” the statement read.
“The President acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure.”
Onanuga said the former IGP cited “pressing family considerations” for stepping down.
Egbetokun was appointed on June 19, 2023, replacing Usman Baba, and was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council in October 2023. He was serving a four-year term under the amended Police Act and was due to complete his tenure in June 2027.
In line with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s nomination as substantive Inspector-General of Police before forwarding his name to the Senate for confirmation.
“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period,” the statement added.
“The President reiterates his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.”
Prior to this appointment, Disu had earlier this month assumed office as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos State.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, alongside master’s degrees in public administration, criminology, and security and legal psychology.
His career includes service as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, Head of the Intelligence Response Team, Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and AIG in charge of the Special Protection Unit.
