Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas is planning to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss ways to resolve the issues of the doctors’ strike.
The purpose of this is to resolve the issues brought up by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) and avert a future strike.
On Monday in Abuja, Abbas discussed the formation of a special committee with the NARD’s top officials.
This committee, under the direction of House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, is in charge of including all interested parties in the problem-solving process.
The committee will also include all medical specialists that work in the House.
The Deputy Chairman will be Tanko Sununu, the most recent chairman of the 9th House Committee on Healthcare Services. The Speaker directed the committee to begin taking action.
Due to unmet demands, resident doctors previously staged a five-day warning strike in May. For the implementation of all of its demands, NARD gave the government a two-week notice in July.
At the resident doctors’ meeting on Monday, Abbas requested two weeks for the House leadership to come up with solutions.
The Speaker pleaded for the doctors’ patience, noting that the 10th House had only been established a month before.
Dr. Innocent Orji, National President of NARD, concurred with the Speaker’s request and promised to inform his organization’s members of the Speaker’s position.
