Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has alleged that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, supports the Biafra movement and is pursuing the division of Nigeria through his presidential ambition.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today while reacting to Obi’s recent call for President Bola Tinubu to resign over worsening insecurity, Sheriff claimed Obi had never condemned the activities or ideology of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
“This country, Nigeria, fought a civil war. Our leaders sacrificed their lives to fight that war to keep the country together, both leaders from the north and the south,” Sheriff said.
“The cause of the war was Ojukwu’s demand to secede. Peter Obi, up to this moment, is pursuing the division of Nigeria.
“How? Because he believes in Biafra. He never condemned Biafra. He never condemned IPOB.
“Biafra is secession. Our leaders fought to keep the country together. He wants to divide Nigeria.”
Sheriff challenged Obi to publicly reject the allegation, saying:
“He should deny it. He should come to this station and say he doesn’t believe in dividing the country. He should deny it. I am confronting him, telling him this is what he stands for.”
He argued that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria must be committed to preserving the country’s unity.
The comments come after Obi renewed his criticism of the Tinubu administration over security and economic challenges. On June 22, the former Anambra State governor urged President Tinubu to resign, describing his administration as a “monumental failure” in governance, and later renewed the call following reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said some public spending in Nigeria was omitted from various budgets, a claim Obi said raised fresh concerns about corruption under the current administration.
