Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially declared the Edo Central Senatorial District seat vacant following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State. The announcement was made during a valedictory session held in Okpebholo’s honor on Wednesday.
Acting on a formal request from Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, Akpabio directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacant seat. “In line with your letter and the Constitution, the seat of Edo Central Senatorial District is hereby declared vacant,” Akpabio said.
Okpebholo assumed office as Edo State Governor in November 2024 after securing victory in the September governorship election.
Citing paragraph D of Section 68 of the Nigerian Constitution, Moro explained that a senator’s seat automatically becomes vacant upon assuming another elective office.
“This vacancy has become necessary following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State. In accordance with the Constitution, his seat is now deemed vacant, and we invite you to declare it,” Moro stated.
The vacancy in Edo Central, combined with the recent passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra South, has reduced the Senate’s membership to 107 from its full capacity of 109.
INEC is expected to announce a date for the by-election to ensure the Edo Central Senatorial District has representation in the upper legislative chamber.
