Senate Committee Seeks Additional Information on Trump Defense Nominee Pete Hegseth Amid Allegations

The Senate Armed Services Committee has quietly requested additional information regarding allegations of sexual assault and financial misconduct involving Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense. The requests, sent to the veterans organization Hegseth formerly led and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, reflect bipartisan concerns over the nominee’s past conduct.

The allegations against Hegseth, a former Fox News host, include a 2017 sexual assault claim and accusations of financial impropriety. Hegseth has denied all allegations, which have cast uncertainty over his confirmation prospects. With a slim margin for error, he can only afford to lose the support of three Republican senators when his nomination is brought to a vote in the coming weeks.

In early December, committee leaders Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.) issued formal requests for documents related to the allegations. These documents are to be submitted by Monday, January 6, in advance of Hegseth’s scheduled confirmation hearing on January 14. The requests, reviewed by ABC News, specifically sought information from the Monterey County District Attorney regarding the 2017 sexual assault allegation, which resurfaced in November following Trump’s announcement of Hegseth as his Defense Department pick.

The allegations and ongoing investigation pose significant challenges for Hegseth’s confirmation. His nomination has drawn scrutiny from both parties, and the outcome of the committee’s inquiry could play a pivotal role in determining his fate.

As the confirmation hearing approaches, the Senate Armed Services Committee’s findings may weigh heavily on the debate surrounding Hegseth’s suitability for the role.
