Senate Approves Yuguda for CBN, Onwu for NDIC Board

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria following a voice vote during plenary.

The confirmation followed a strong endorsement by Muhammad Danjuma Goje, who described Yuguda as highly qualified and experienced. He noted that the nominee began his career at the apex bank as a fresh graduate and rose through the ranks to become a director.

Goje also highlighted Yuguda’s tenure as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, stating that he performed creditably in the role. He described him as “fully qualified, highly experienced, well-behaved, well-respected, and trustworthy,” urging lawmakers to support the nomination.

Following deliberations, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the report of its Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions before confirming the appointment.

In a related development, the Senate also approved the appointment of Peggy Ufanima Onwu as an Independent Director on the board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Announcing the decisions, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said both appointments had been duly approved by the chamber.

The nominees had earlier been screened by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions prior to their confirmation.
