SAN Urges Nigerians to Embrace Farming to Tackle Food Insecurity

Mohammed Ndarani, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has called on Nigerians across all classes to return to farming as a means of combating food insecurity in the country.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja, Ndarani expressed concern over reports that 26.5 million Nigerians faced food insecurity in 2024 due to unpredictable farming seasons, flash floods, and prolonged droughts.

“Growing up, every family had farms. We were all farmers, going to the farm after school, and there was sufficient food in the country,” Ndarani recalled. He urged Nigerians to adopt both small-scale backyard farming and large-scale mechanized agriculture, citing Niger State Governor Umaru Bago as an example of a leader championing agricultural development.

The SAN praised the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action in Mokwa, Niger State, as a significant step toward addressing food insecurity.

“This university reflects Governor Bago’s vision for education and agriculture. It will not only tackle food security but also reduce unemployment by creating direct and indirect jobs,” Ndarani said.

He emphasized the importance of specialized agricultural institutions in producing climate-resilient crops, improving water management, and promoting sustainable farming practices. He urged the university to attract research-based businesses, foster innovation, and develop methods to combat the effects of climate change on agriculture.

Ndarani concluded by expressing high expectations for the new university’s contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural sector and economic growth, especially in Mokwa and Niger State.
