Presidency Denies Report on Renaming Nigeria, Abolishing Sharia Law

The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to initiate constitutional amendments to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the North.

In a statement issued on Thursday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga described the report as fake, misleading, and politically motivated.

According to Onanuga, the story, which reportedly relied on anonymous sources, was designed to create tension, stir political unrest, and destabilise the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He accused unnamed political actors of deliberately spreading falsehood to generate public disaffection and overheat the political atmosphere.

The presidential aide urged Nigerians to completely disregard the report, describing those behind it as agents of destabilisation and promoters of disorder.

Onanuga also denied claims that President Tinubu intends to forward a proposed constitutional amendment bill allegedly code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly before the elections.

According to him, constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a clearly defined legal and legislative process that cannot be carried out unilaterally by either the President or the National Assembly.

He explained that any amendment to the Constitution requires extensive debate and approval by at least two-thirds of members of both chambers of the National Assembly, alongside endorsement by no fewer than 24 State Houses of Assembly.

Onanuga stressed that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing and consolidating the economic reforms introduced by his administration to improve the lives of Nigerians.

The Presidency also warned Nigerians against falling for divisive and misleading reports, cautioning that the spread of fake news could intensify as political activities ahead of the January 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum.
