Millions of people across the Northeast are preparing for a powerful nor’easter expected to bring heavy rain, damaging winds and potentially significant travel disruptions through the weekend.
The storm could produce widespread power outages as strong winds and saturated conditions increase the risk of downed trees and power lines. Air travel could also be disrupted at major airports along the Northeast corridor.
The severe weather has already forced the cancellation of several major weekend events. Ed Sheeran’s scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts have been canceled, while New York City’s Global Citizen Festival and the Oceans Calling music festival in Ocean City, Maryland, have also been called off.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York City, Long Island and Westchester County as the region prepares for the storm.
Hochul urged residents to “take this storm seriously” and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
In neighboring New Jersey, Gov. Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency in eight counties expected to experience some of the most severe impacts: Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem.
Residents across the affected areas are being urged to monitor weather alerts and exercise caution as the nor’easter moves through the region over the weekend.
