PDP Governors Reaffirm Support for Siminalayi Fubara as Leader in Rivers State

Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reiterated their support for Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State, amidst ongoing tension between Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over party control in the state. The governors had previously declared their backing for Fubara following a meeting in Taraba State.

In a statement, the PDP Governors’ Forum expressed their intent to collaborate with the National Working Committee (NWC) to rectify the issues surrounding party congresses in Rivers, reaffirming Fubara’s leadership.

The declaration has angered Wike, who threatened retaliation against those who interfere in his state. However, Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed humorously responded, saying, “Bauchi has enough water to quench such fire.” He emphasized that the forum would continue to support the established practice of recognizing serving governors as state party leaders.

In a meeting with the PDP NWC delegation, Mohammed highlighted the importance of respecting Fubara’s control over the party’s structure in Rivers. He also acknowledged ongoing efforts to reconcile Fubara and Wike. Additionally, Mohammed discussed the need for constitutional adherence in filling leadership vacancies, particularly in the PDP’s National Chairman position.

Despite internal conflicts, Mohammed expressed confidence that the PDP would secure victory in Nigeria’s next presidential election.
