The National Reconciliation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Osun State governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has finalized its investigation into the party’s internal crisis. The committee, after meeting in Abuja on Monday, is scheduled to present its findings and recommendations to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday, which will subsequently be transmitted to the National Executive Council (NEC) for ratification during its meeting on Thursday.
Speaking with journalists, Mr. Oyinlola explained that the committee addressed key issues, including reuniting aggrieved members and strategizing for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election. He emphasized the importance of party unity, which the committee believes is essential for the PDP’s future electoral success. The committee toured the South-West region in its effort to reconcile members and gather valuable suggestions for rebuilding the party.
When asked about the potential suspension of members, Mr. Oyinlola clarified that no such recommendations had been made. Instead, the committee plans to finalize its discussions with the NWC before reaching any conclusions.
In preparation for the NEC meeting on October 24, PDP governors are also convening to discuss key party issues, including the contentious national chairmanship position. Party leaders from the North Central zone have called for current PDP National Chairman Illiya Damagum to revert to his deputy national chairmanship role, making way for a new nomination. Among the top contenders for the role of substantive national chairman are former Benue State Governor Senator Gabriel Suswam, Emmanuel Agbo, and Conrad Utaan.
This critical meeting will address the protests from party leaders in the North Central zone and aims to set the course for resolving the party’s internal struggles as the PDP seeks to solidify its position ahead of future elections.
