Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has called on the agency’s striking staff to return to work, highlighting the potential risks the ongoing strike poses to the health and safety of Nigerians. The strike, which commenced on October 7, was initiated by the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) in protest over issues related to staff welfare, including promotion exams, staff appointments, and payment of pending benefits.
In a letter addressed to the striking workers on Monday, Adeyeye expressed concern over the disruption of critical regulatory functions due to the strike. She pointed out the reputational damage and financial losses incurred by the agency as a result. While SSASCGOC has paused its strike, Adeyeye noted that the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) remains firm in its decision to continue the industrial action.
Adeyeye reassured the workers that efforts are underway to address their grievances, including ongoing discussions with the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation regarding promotion vacancies. She emphasized that the agency is committed to resolving outstanding issues, including payment of allowances, insurance benefits, and other entitlements.
In her plea, Adeyeye urged the workers to return to duty for the good of the nation, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism. She expressed hope that her appeal would be heeded to restore the agency’s operations.
