Godknows Igali, the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has called on the newly established House of Representatives ad hoc committee on the emergency rule in Rivers State to remain impartial in its duties.
The 21-member committee, inaugurated by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Tuesday, is tasked with ensuring transparent governance and upholding the rule of law in Rivers following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state on March 18. This declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state’s house of assembly for six months. Ibok-Ette Ibas, a retired naval officer, was appointed as the sole administrator.
In a letter dated April 16, Igali commended the establishment of the committee, emphasizing the need for neutrality in its oversight role. He praised Professor Julius Ihonvbere, the committee chairman, for his recognized integrity and expertise, expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to uphold high standards.
Igali also raised concerns over the dissolution of democratic institutions by Administrator Ibas, particularly his controversial appointments of sole administrators across local government councils and ministries. PANDEF and other stakeholders have criticized Ibas for his handling of state affairs.
Igali further urged the committee to prioritize a political resolution in Rivers, with a focus on the restoration of Governor Fubara. He emphasized the urgency of this task, noting the state’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
Concluding, Igali stressed that the reinstatement of democracy in Rivers, particularly the return of Governor Fubara, is crucial for national stability and should be given top priority.
