NLC Demands Immediate Reversal of Fuel Price Hike, Criticizes Government Policies

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong demand for the “immediate reversal” of the recently increased petrol pump price across the nation. In a post shared on its X (formerly Twitter) page late Tuesday, the NLC stated: “We demand the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the pump of PMS across the country.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the union expressed feelings of betrayal by President Bola Tinubu following the announcement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that the official fuel price had been raised from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre.

Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, emphasized that the acceptance of the ₦70,000 minimum wage was based on the understanding that there would be no further increase in fuel prices. Ajaero further warned that the union’s relevant bodies would convene soon to decide on the next course of action, which will be communicated publicly.

The NLC has made several demands, including:

  1. Immediate Reversal of the latest fuel price hike across the country.
  2. Release of Detained Protesters who are being prosecuted for allegedly participating in recent protests.
  3. End to Arbitrary Arrests and detention of citizens on fabricated charges.
  4. Reversal of the 250% Electricity Tariff Increase.
  5. Prevention of the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s Duties from Being Hijacked.
  6. Halt to Policies that foster hunger and insecurity.
  7. End to the Government’s Culture of Intimidation, fear, and dishonesty.

The NLC reiterated its commitment to the sovereignty, integrity, and welfare of the Nigerian people, vowing to take necessary actions in the coming days.
