Nigeria and Somalia Collaborate on Data Protection as Privacy Becomes a Universal Right

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), highlighted the global imperative of protecting citizen privacy during a recent meeting with international data protection experts from Somalia. Olatunji emphasized that safeguarding privacy is a fundamental right and a critical aspect of modern governance, reflecting the principles enshrined in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

The Somali delegation visited Nigeria to gain insights into its data protection practices and advanced privacy models. “In this digital age, protecting the privacy of all citizens worldwide is paramount,” Olatunji stated. He noted that many countries are now implementing robust measures to uphold data protection rights and establish dedicated data protection authorities.

Somalia’s ambassador to Nigeria, Jamal Mohammed, commended Nigeria’s expertise in data protection and encouraged the Somali delegation to draw upon Nigeria’s knowledge and experience. “Everything Somalia needs in terms of knowledge and experience is available in Nigeria,” Mohammed remarked.

He also acknowledged the challenges of shifting perceptions between Nigerians and Somalians and expressed hope that the successful exchange of ideas will strengthen ties and enhance data protection practices in both countries. The collaboration aims to advance data privacy and security, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting citizens’ information in an increasingly digital world.
