The implementation of the new minimum wage of N70,000 is set to take effect from July 29, 2024, as confirmed by the Committee on Consequential Adjustments in Salaries for civil servants. This announcement was made in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) released after the committee’s meeting in Abuja.
The committee also recommended that the wage award, which had been previously discontinued by the federal government, should continue to be disbursed until July 28, 2024. Chaired by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, the committee underscored that the government’s decisions were shaped by the prevailing economic conditions.
According to the MoU, the committee held four meetings and thoroughly examined presentations from both the federal government and trade unions. It took into account the federal government’s capacity to handle any salary adjustments resulting from the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024, as well as the implications for other employers.
