Ndume Accuses Tinubu of Breaching Constitution with Lopsided Appointments

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has accused President Bola Tinubu of violating constitutional provisions through political appointments that heavily favor the South West.

Speaking on Arise TV, Ndume pointed to Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates equitable representation across Nigeria’s regions in federal appointments. He said Tinubu’s choices so far have not upheld the principle of federal character.

“The figures are there. It’s not that I’m just making accusations… Section 14(3) of the Constitution is very, very clear on that,” Ndume stated.

Clarifying that his comments were not personal attacks, the senator emphasized the importance of correcting what he called “infractions” before they undermine national unity. “I’m only calling Mr President’s attention to these infractions for correction so that it doesn’t boomerang,” he said.

Ndume, a senior lawmaker, reiterated that legislative oversight includes holding the executive accountable. “I have the right to criticise the government. That’s why I’m in the National Assembly — to point out irregularities,” he asserted.

Anticipating backlash from supporters of the president, Ndume stood firm, calling his remarks a moral and constitutional duty. “This is not about me being a senator. It’s about my right as a Nigerian to speak out even protest  against what is wrong.”

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to speaking truth to power regardless of political consequences.
