A Massachusetts grand jury has indicted former doctor Derrick Todd on charges of sexually assaulting more than 200 patients over more than a decade, authorities announced.
Todd is accused of conducting unnecessary medical procedures, including pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, and testicular examinations, dating back to 2010. The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office revealed on Thursday that Todd has been indicted on two counts of rape involving alleged sexual assaults on two women in December 2022 and June 2023.
During his arraignment on Friday, Todd pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail. The court imposed strict conditions, including prohibiting contact with victims, surrendering his passport and medical licenses, and barring him from practicing medicine or applying for new licenses.
Authorities have stated that investigations into additional allegations against Todd are ongoing. Attorney William Thompson, of the Boston-based firm Lubin & Meyer, which represents more than 180 of Todd’s accusers, indicated that the criminal case against the former doctor is expected to expand.
“It’s just the beginning of the criminal case against Dr. Todd, but it does help validate the civil claims that Lubin & Meyer is pursuing on behalf of so many of his former patients,” Thompson said.
Thompson confirmed that a civil case against Todd is currently in the discovery phase. “Fundamentally, it’s about a doctor abusing his position and taking advantage of patients who trusted him, for his own personal sexual gratification,” he added.
Requests for comment from Todd’s legal representatives, Anthony Abeln and Ingrid Martin, were not immediately returned.
This case underscores the gravity of allegations against Todd, with potential ramifications in both criminal and civil courts as investigations continue.
