Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called for a constitutional amendment to limit elected political office holders across all levels of government in Nigeria to a single term of five or six years, replacing the current two-term structure of four years each.
Governor Makinde made this proposal on Friday when he received a delegation of Muslim faithful, clerics, traditional rulers, and political office holders at his Ikolaba residence in Ibadan, shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Agodi Eid Ground.
The delegation, led by Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, included prominent figures such as:
- Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja
- PDP Deputy National Chairman, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja
- Former deputy governors Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi and Engr. Hamid Gbadamosi
- Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin, Member representing Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency
- Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta, Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola
Governor Makinde used the opportunity to express gratitude for the support and prayers of the Muslim community over the past six years of his administration.
Speaking on the proposed single tenure model, he said:
“Effectively, the time we can say we are very serious with governance is just about five out of the eight years. We lost a year to COVID-19 in 2020, and then another year to second-term campaigning.
That is why I believe that a single tenure of five or six years would allow leaders to focus and deliver on their mandate without distractions.”
Makinde noted that the idea is not about personal gain but a call for better governance through structural reform.
“It has nothing to do with me. If they say I should end it, so be it. We should not be afraid to speak the truth based on facts and experience,” he added.
He called on the National Assembly and Nigerians at large to begin deliberations on adopting the model, which he believes would strengthen governance and reduce political distractions.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Otun Olubadan, Oba Ladoja, urged continued support for Governor Makinde and prayed for the success of his administration.
Speaking to journalists after the prayer, Deputy Governor Lawal highlighted the importance of obedience, trust, and sacrifice—values symbolized by the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. He commended the governor for his commitment to workers’ welfare and timely salary payments and urged citizens to sustain their support for the administration.
