Lawan, according to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ola Awoniyi, requested a meeting summoned by him to find a solution to the persisting concerns between the staff and the National Assembly management.
Workers in the National Assembly have been on strike since Monday under the auspices of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria to push their demands for the payment of certain allowances.
Lawan said, “I want to urge you, whenever we disagree, let’s try to come and sit and talk about it because when we talk, we can find some common grounds and solutions. I am very happy that we have been able to deal with this.”
President of PASAN, Comrade Mohammed Usman, also led his other colleagues who are officials of PASAN.
After the two sides had narrated their positions on the disputes, the Senate President assured the workers that he would reach out to the relevant authorities that would facilitate the speedy resolution of the issues involved.
Meanwhile, Lawan met with the striking National Assembly workers on Friday evening in an effort to stop the one-week strike and urge the demand for payment of the overdue National Minimum Wage and implementation of the Revised Conditions of Service.
The meeting, which was begun at the request of the Senate President, was planned for 4 p.m. in Conference Room 301 of the Senate Wing, according to the notice sent to Parliamentary Correspondents.
However, Parliamentary Correspondents’ attempts to attend the meeting were thwarted when some National Assembly officials stopped them from entering the facility.
“We don’t need journalists, go! What are you doing here? the meeting is not for you.”
Efforts to obtain remarks from the meeting were futile since PASAN members hounded, harassed, and insulted journalists who had waited with them for more than three hours.
