LASIEC Sets Lagos Council Election for July 12

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has announced July 12 as the date for the 2025 local council elections across the state.

According to Tope Ojo, LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, the election will cover 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillorship seats. A re-run, if necessary, is scheduled for July 19.

The election will be held across 20 Local Governments, 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards. The timeline aims to prevent a leadership vacuum as the tenure of the current local government administration winds down.

With the release of the Notice of Election, LASIEC has formally kicked off the electoral process. Political parties are expected to pick up nomination forms at the LASIEC headquarters.

A meeting with all registered political parties is scheduled for Tuesday, while the Election Guidelines will be published on April 17. Campaigns are to begin April 18 and end July 9.

Submissions of nomination forms for substituted and sole candidates must be made between June 18 and June 25.

LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), has assured all stakeholders of a free, fair, credible, and inclusive election and urged political actors to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable.
