Ken Martin Elected Chairman of the Democratic National Committee

Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin has been elected as the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) following a decisive victory.

Martin secured 246.5 votes out of 428 total votes, cast both in person and by proxy. The announcement was met with enthusiastic cheers from DNC members, who chanted, “Yes, we Ken!” as the results were revealed.

“Ken Martin is now the Chair of the Democratic Party,” outgoing DNC Chairman Jamie Harrison declared upon announcing the vote count.

Election Results:

Runner-up Ben Wikler, chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, received 134.5 votes, while former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley garnered 44 votes. Additionally, four members abstained from voting.

Other candidates received minimal support:

  • Faiz Shakir – 2 votes
  • Jason Paul – 1 vote
  • Nate Snyder, Quintessa Hathaway, and Marianne Williamson – 0 votes

In his victory speech, Martin emphasized unity and the party’s commitment to fighting for working people.

“We have one team: the Democratic Party. We have one fight. … The fight is for our values, for working people, and right now, against Donald Trump and the billionaires who bought this country,” he declared.

Speaking with reporters shortly after his win, Martin outlined his top three priorities:

  1. Establishing a rapid-response “war room” to push back against Trump and define the party’s agenda.
  2. Reviewing the party’s electoral strategy following recent losses in the White House and Congress.
  3. Conducting a financial audit of the DNC’s resources and operations.

Adopting a combative stance, Martin vowed to be aggressive in countering Trump and leading Republicans.

“I’m going to throw a punch,” he stated. “Donald Trump, Republican Party—this is a new DNC. We are not going to sit back and let you fail the American people without a fight.”

Party Leaders React:

Despite several prominent Democratic figures endorsing Wikler, Martin received widespread congratulations from within the party.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who had backed Wikler, posted, “I can’t wait to work together to unite the Democratic Party, fight for working families, and win.”

Martin’s home-state governor, Tim Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, also expressed his support, writing, “Congratulations, Ken!” on X.

While heavyweights such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had backed Wikler, Martin downplayed any divisions within the party.

“This is not personal. We’re all on the same team,” he said. “At the end of the day, I am buoyed by the enthusiastic support I received. It was a one-ballot victory for a reason.”

Martin now takes the helm of the DNC with a mission to unify the party and take a more aggressive stance ahead of the upcoming elections.
