INEC: Senatorial Recall Costs More Than an Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that recalling a senator is more expensive than a regular senatorial election due to the extensive logistics and manpower required.

Speaking during an X Spaces discussion on Saturday, Prof. Mohammed Kuna, Special Adviser to the INEC Chairman, described the recall process as a complex and resource-intensive exercise.

“A recall process is like conducting an election itself. It requires mobilisation of staff, deployment of materials, technology, and transportation. In fact, a recall is even more demanding than a typical election, as we have to go back to the field three times,” Kuna explained.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to due process if a recall petition meets the necessary requirements.

INEC also clarified that a by-election would be conducted if a National Assembly seat becomes vacant, with budgetary provisions already in place for such scenarios.

This statement follows the recent submission of a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central Senatorial District at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
