IGP Charges Sowore with Forgery, False Publication, and Incitement

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has filed a three-count charge against politician and online publisher Omoyele Sowore over alleged forgery and false publication.

The charges, brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuse Sowore and his media platform, Sahara Reporters, of conspiring to forge a police wireless message and publishing it online.

One of the counts alleges that on July 30, 2025, Sowore and Sahara Reporters forged a police signal purportedly signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP, an offence said to contravene Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17. Another count claims that on July 31, 2025, Sowore posted the forged signal and other “inciting materials” on Facebook with intent to provoke mutiny against the Federal Government, in violation of Section 114 of the Penal Code.

Sowore was scheduled for arraignment on today, but proceedings stalled as prosecutors had yet to serve Sahara Reporters, listed as the second defendant. Prosecuting counsel Wisdom Madaki told the court that efforts were ongoing to serve the charge via substituted means through a newspaper publication.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the request for a fresh date and adjourned the case to September 15 for arraignment.
