Gunman Kills Five, Then Himself in Bangkok Market Shooting

A gunman opened fire at a produce market in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district on Monday, killing five security guards before taking his own life, Thai police confirmed.

The incident unfolded at a market specializing in agricultural goods, leaving no tourists harmed, according to local police official Sanong Saengmani. Authorities emphasized that Thailand’s vital tourism sector remains unaffected, aiming to reassure the public and international observers.

Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Charin Gopatta, said an investigation is underway to determine the gunman’s identity and motive. Video released by police shows the suspected attacker—wearing a white hat and carrying a chest-slung backpack—walking through the market’s parking lot shortly before the shooting began.

Thailand has seen a rise in high-profile shootings in recent years. In October 2023, a 14-year-old killed two people at a luxury mall using a modified handgun, and a year prior, a former police officer massacred 36 people, including 22 children, at a nursery.

Authorities are continuing their probe into Monday’s attack as questions mount over how and why the gunman carried out the assault.
