Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) major industrialized nations are set to convene in the French lakeside resort of Evian-les-Bains on Monday, with growing concerns over global trade disputes, geopolitical conflicts and the future role of the United States in international affairs expected to dominate discussions.
The three-day summit, running from June 15 to June 17, comes as allies remain uneasy about President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and broader questions surrounding Washington’s commitment to the international order.
One of the key topics on the agenda will be the situation involving Iran, following announcements by both the United States and Tehran that they had reached a preliminary agreement aimed at ending their conflict. Leaders are expected to discuss the next steps and the implications for regional and global stability.
The summit will also focus on efforts to coordinate support for Ukraine, address global economic imbalances and strengthen supply chains for critical minerals, as countries seek to reduce dependence on China, the world’s dominant supplier in the sector.
Trump’s attendance has drawn particular attention. French officials welcomed confirmation that he would participate in the summit after his early departure from last year’s G7 gathering in Canada raised concerns among allies.
Highlighting the trade tensions ahead of the meeting, Trump warned in an interview with the New York Post that the United States could impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on French wine imports if France does not repeal its digital services tax on major American technology companies.
The comments underscore ongoing disputes between Washington and several of its allies over trade, taxation and economic policy, issues that are expected to feature prominently during the summit discussions.
As leaders gather in Evian-les-Bains, the challenge will be finding common ground on a range of pressing international issues while managing growing divisions within the group over trade and global governance.
