France Vows Measured Response to Trump’s Expected Tariffs, Urges Calm in Trade Dispute

France’s Industry Minister Marc Ferracci said Wednesday that Europe will respond proportionately to U.S. President Donald Trump’s expected announcement of new global tariffs, but stressed that the European Union will not seek to escalate tensions.

In an interview with RMC radio, Ferracci emphasized that Europe remains committed to diplomacy and de-escalation in the face of rising trade pressures.

“Europe has always favored negotiation and easing tensions,” Ferracci said. “Trade wars, as history shows, only create losers.”

President Trump is expected to unveil a broad package of reciprocal tariffs targeting several major trading partners, raising concerns among economists and policymakers about potential price hikes and the risk of global retaliation.

While the EU has previously responded to U.S. tariffs with its own countermeasures, Ferracci’s comments indicate a more cautious stance this time—focusing on maintaining stability in international markets and avoiding a wider economic confrontation.
