FG Declares Christmas, New Year Public Holidays


The Federal Government has designated December 25th and 26th as public holidays for the Christmas and Boxing Day celebrations, along with Monday, January 1st, 2024, for New Year’s Day festivities.
In a statement, Peter Egbodo, the Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Interior, conveyed the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
“The Federal Government has declared Monday 25th, Tuesday 26th December, 2023 and Monday, January, 1st 2024 as public holidays to mark Christmas and New Year Day celebrations, respectively, ” the Director Overseeing Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior Peter Egbodo said in a Friday statement.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extended felicitations to Christians and all Nigerians, urging Christians to embody the teachings of Jesus Christ in humility, service, compassion, and patience.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasized the significance of peace and security for economic development and prosperity, assuring that the government has implemented measures to ensure security during the celebrations. He urged Nigerians to be security conscious and report any suspicious activities.
“Dr Tunji-Ojo enjoined Christians to emulate the life of Jesus Christ in His practice and teachings of humility, service, compassion, and patience. peace and righteousness that His birth signifies,” he added.
“He emphasized that peace and security are critical prerequisites for economic development and prosperity.”
The minister reminded citizens of the importance of discipline to safeguard lives and properties during the Yuletide season.
He expressed optimism for a better year in 2024 with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President, extending wishes for a happy Christmas and a peaceful, prosperous New Year celebration to all Nigerians, especially Christians.
“Dr Tunji-Ojo admonished all Citizens to remain focused that, the year 2024 will be a better year with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President. The Minister wishes all Nigerians, especially Christians a happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year celebration,” the statement further read.
