Ekiti Police: Dele Farotimi Arrested Over Cyberbullying Allegations

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the arrest of Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, on charges of cyberbullying and defamation. Akinwale stated on Tuesday that Farotimi was under investigation for “defamation of character and cyberstalking,” with the allegations “fully established.” The investigation will determine his culpability.

Farotimi’s arrest has sparked criticism from prominent figures, including Akin Osuntokun, Director General of the Labour Party presidential campaign council, and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore. Osuntokun raised concerns over the method of arrest, questioning its adherence to due process, and expressed skepticism about reports linking Chief Afe Babalola to the case.

Sowore condemned the arrest, calling it an abuse of police power. He claimed the action was triggered by a petition from Tony Elumelu of UBA Group accusing Farotimi of defamation. Sowore urged the police to release Farotimi, asserting that it was a civil matter that should not involve law enforcement.

Farotimi, who had previously accused police operatives from Ekiti of attempting to abduct him, voiced concerns for his safety. He criticized the law enforcement’s approach, claiming he had cooperated with all previous police invitations. However, Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer, Umma Ayuba, denied Farotimi’s recent custody, clarifying that he had been invited over an allegation two weeks ago and was released after complying.

The arrest has ignited a broader debate about the misuse of police powers and its impact on Nigeria’s democratic values.
