Edwin Clark Urges Suspension of Governors’ Forum to Avert Looming Crises

Elder statesman and convener of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark, has called for the immediate suspension of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), citing its deviation from its founding purpose of fostering collaboration among states and enhancing democracy.

In an open letter released on Monday, Clark expressed concerns about the forum’s current state, stating that its operations have increasingly prioritized personal interests over public service.

“Let us take a reflective stroll through the years, examining how this body, initially intended as a platform for collaboration, has often strayed into the realm of power without accountability, influence without responsibility,” the letter read.

Clark criticized the forum for its resistance to reforms, secrecy, and prioritization of power over service, labeling it as a “notorious cabal.” Despite these shortcomings, he acknowledged the forum’s potential to become a positive force through meaningful reforms.

“With meaningful reforms, the NGF can transform into a force for good. Let us imagine a reconstituted NGF one that aligns with constitutional principles and serves as a true platform for collaboration rather than control,” he stated.

Clark urged for the suspension and reconstitution of the forum to align with its original intent and prevent conflicts among governments.

“Therefore, I strongly advise the suspension of the Governors’ Forum from now in order to avert the looming crises between the various governments,” he concluded.
