The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State have expressed confidence in securing victory as the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal delivers its judgment today.
The PDP and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, are challenging the declaration of APC’s Sen. Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the September 21, 2024, governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging widespread irregularities.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, reserved its judgment on March 3 after parties submitted their final arguments.
APC’s acting chairman in Edo, Jarret Tenebe, expressed optimism about a favorable outcome, stating, “We are confident of victory because we have a strong case, and our lawyers have done an excellent job. If you challenge an election, you must prove irregularities beyond a reasonable doubt, which the PDP failed to do.”
Similarly, PDP caretaker committee’s publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, remained hopeful, emphasizing that the party had presented a well-documented case. “Our only wish is for the judges to be fair and transparent. We trust that the verdict will reflect the evidence tendered,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor Okpebholo urged residents to maintain peace, regardless of the outcome. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, he said, “The tribunal’s decision is a crucial part of our democracy, and we must respect its authority. I have full confidence in our judiciary and the resilience of our people.”
