DOJ Opens Criminal Investigation Into E. Jean Carroll

The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former Elle columnist who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Sources said investigators are examining whether Carroll committed perjury during her civil lawsuits against Trump, cases that ultimately resulted in a $5 million judgment in her favor.

According to the sources, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has recused himself from the investigation because he previously represented Trump in matters related to the case.

CNN first reported details of the investigation, which sources say is being overseen by Andrew Boutros, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

The inquiry is the latest in a series of Justice Department investigations involving critics and political opponents of Trump, several of which have encountered challenges in federal courts and before grand juries.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation. Attorneys representing Carroll also declined to comment.
