Atiku Should Quit Presidential Race, Become Father Figure – Baba-Ahmed

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former political adviser to President Bola Tinubu, has called on Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to step aside from future presidential contests and focus on mentoring emerging political leaders.

Speaking on AIT during an interview on Monday, Baba-Ahmed acknowledged Atiku’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey but argued that it was time for him to take on a more statesmanlike, supportive role.

“You are a very prominent member of the PDP, a founding member. You’ve been vice president for eight years and contested for the presidency three times,” he said.
“I think he should be a hero of democracy, but I don’t think he should aspire to lead this country again.”

He urged Atiku to help build a credible opposition platform by nurturing new talent and injecting fresh energy into the political landscape.

“He should bring in new blood, new perspectives, and new people and say, ‘The future belongs to you.’ We will stand behind him,” Baba-Ahmed added.

He extended the advice to other political heavyweights like Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting their experience and influence would be more valuable in supporting new leadership rather than pursuing personal political ambitions.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among political observers who believe generational renewal is vital for Nigeria’s democracy, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
