Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing him as a fearless champion of justice and democracy.
In a statement, Atiku hailed the late Afenifere leader as “a formidable force and a fearless fighter for justice, equity, and an egalitarian society.”
“I can vividly recall the heroic role that Pa Adebanjo played in wresting power from the military and enthroning democratic governance in Nigeria. He was at the forefront of the fight against military dictatorship,” Atiku said.
He highlighted Adebanjo’s lifelong commitment to fighting oppression from resisting colonial rule in his youth to challenging military regimes in his middle years and advocating for democracy and the rule of law in his later years.
“Pa Adebanjo was a golden example of how to live and die for the good of the country. Apart from mentoring many generations of civil rights activists, he was an activist extraordinaire and a bridge builder who led the battle against injustice from the trenches,” Atiku added.
Atiku emphasized that Adebanjo’s life serves as an invaluable guide for present and future activists striving for good governance.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a revered statesman and fearless advocate for democracy, passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a lasting legacy of courage and service.!
