Kayinsola Ajayi claimed his second consecutive Diamond League 100 metres title with another outstanding performance at the London Stadium on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Nigerian defeated Jamaica’s Oblique Seville for the second time in as many weeks, crossing the finish line in 9.84 seconds to equal the Nigerian national record—a time he has now recorded three times in the past two months.

Ajayi and Seville were neck-and-neck over the opening 50 metres before the Nigerian accelerated in the closing stages to pull clear and secure victory.

Seville finished second in 9.87 seconds, while Great Britain’s Romell Glave claimed third place with a personal best of 9.97 seconds, edging Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who posted the same time.

The quality of the field was underlined by South Africa’s Gift Leotlela and American sprinter Jordan Anthony, who both dipped below the 10-second mark with 9.99 seconds to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.

British duo Zharnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu placed seventh and eighth in 10.02 seconds and 10.07 seconds, respectively.

Ajayi’s latest victory extends his impressive run of form ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where he is expected to be one of Team Nigeria’s leading medal contenders.

Nigeria failed to win an individual medal in the men’s sprint events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Ajayi is also the reigning National Collegiate Athletic Association champion in both the men’s 60m indoor and 100m outdoor events.

He won the NCAA 100m title with a wind-assisted 9.72-second performance, placing him joint sixth alongside Asafa Powell on the all-conditions list of the world’s fastest sprinters. Only Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay, Yohan Blake, Obadele Thompson and Andre De Grasse have recorded faster times under all conditions.
