Adelabu Resigns as Power Minister to Pursue Oyo Governorship

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from office to focus on his ambition to contest the Oyo State governorship.

His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with effect from April 30, 2026.

The letter, submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, stated that the decision was taken to allow a smooth transition and comply with provisions of the amended Electoral Act.

Adelabu said he was stepping down with “a deep sense of honour and profound gratitude,” noting that the move would enable him to fully pursue his political ambition.

“My decision to step down is guided by my desire to fully comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act and to focus on my governorship aspiration in Oyo State,” he said.

The minister highlighted key achievements during his tenure, including the implementation of the Electricity Act 2023, which decentralised the electricity market, and an increase in peak power generation to over 6,000 megawatts through projects such as the Zungeru hydropower plant and rehabilitation of thermal plants.

He also cited improvements in distribution performance, metering initiatives supported by the World Bank, and financial reforms that increased market revenue from ₦1 trillion in 2023 to ₦2.3 trillion in 2025.

Adelabu, however, acknowledged ongoing challenges in the sector, including gas supply constraints, infrastructure vandalism, and the need for stronger institutional coordination.

He proposed the creation of a coordinating minister for energy to improve policy alignment across power, gas, water resources, and environmental sectors.

The minister expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his role as a privilege and reaffirming his commitment to ensuring a smooth handover process before exiting office.
