Thousands Protest in India, Demand Election Chief’s Resignation Over Alleged Voter Manipulation

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of New Delhi on Sunday, demanding the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, amid growing allegations of electoral manipulation and concerns over the future of democracy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The massive demonstration, organized by the opposition INDIA alliance, brought together supporters from several political parties across the country. Protesters waved flags, played musical instruments and chanted slogans condemning government policies and demanding greater transparency in the electoral process.

Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and supported by the youth-led Cockroach movement, the demonstration marked another significant wave of public opposition to the government’s controversial voter registration reforms.

The protesters gathered at Ramlila Maidan, a major public venue in the capital, following a decision by authorities to remove the historic Jantar Mantar protest site from the list of officially approved demonstration locations.

Security was tightened across the city, with thousands of police officers and paramilitary personnel deployed to maintain order. Authorities also installed more than 200 surveillance cameras and used drones and body-worn cameras to monitor the gathering and surrounding areas.

At the center of the controversy is an ongoing nationwide revision of electoral rolls that has resulted in the removal of more than 130 million names from voter lists since last year.

Opposition leaders accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, of using the exercise to manipulate the electoral system in its favor, potentially preventing millions of eligible citizens from participating in future elections.

Critics argue that the process has disproportionately affected vulnerable communities, particularly Muslims and other minority groups, raising serious questions about electoral fairness and equal political representation.

However, India’s Election Commission and the Modi administration have repeatedly rejected allegations of political interference, maintaining that the review is necessary to eliminate duplicate registrations and remove ineligible voters from electoral records.

International human rights organizations have also expressed concerns about the implications of the exercise.

Human Rights Watch warned Thursday that allegations surrounding the voter list revision raise serious doubts about the fairness of future elections in the world’s most populous democracy.

The organization’s Asia director, Elaine Pearson, called for an immediate halt to the exercise, arguing that the process has deprived some of India’s most marginalized citizens of voting rights and access to essential government services.

Meanwhile, demands for Kumar’s resignation have become a central rallying point for opposition parties and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-driven political movement increasingly challenging the ruling establishment.

The Congress party and its allies have accused the BJP of engaging in what they describe as “vote chori,” a Hindi expression meaning vote theft, alleging systematic efforts to influence electoral outcomes through voter registration changes.

The latest demonstration comes weeks after police confronted and detained protesters during earlier rallies in New Delhi, further intensifying tensions between the government and opposition groups.

As political pressure mounts, the dispute over voter registration has emerged as a major test of public confidence in India’s democratic institutions.

With opposition parties demanding accountability and authorities defending the integrity of the electoral review, the controversy is likely to remain a significant source of political tension as India prepares for future elections.
