Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has said the Senate will thoroughly scrutinise President Bola Tinubu’s latest external loan request before considering approval.
Oshiomhole spoke on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, insisting that the National Assembly would not approve the borrowing plan without examining its details.
President Tinubu had on Tuesday sought the National Assembly’s approval for fresh external loans of $20.5 billion and €1.04 billion to fund critical projects across the country.
Reacting, Oshiomhole said the Senate had a responsibility to question how previous loans were spent and establish the purpose of the proposed borrowing.
“The Senate will scrutinise Tinubu’s fresh loan request. We won’t just approve it like that. We must look at it properly and ensure it is in the interest of Nigerians,” Oshiomhole said.
The former Edo State governor also assured Nigerians that the Senate, under Godswill Akpabio’s leadership, would not act as a rubber stamp but would make decisions in the country’s interest.
His comments come amid public concerns over the Federal Government’s plan to secure additional foreign loans amid Nigeria’s rising debt profile.
