Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Cole Palmer sent off as Spurs recorded only their second Premier League win at the venue since 1990.
After a goalless first half, Tottenham broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently punched a left-wing corner into his own net.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side entered the London derby on the back of their first win of the campaign against Coventry City and carried that momentum into the contest, dominating much of the opening half.
Tottenham came close to taking the lead before the break when Omar Marmoush fired straight at Penders, who was making his full league debut for Chelsea.
The hosts, who were without injured leading goalscorer Joao Pedro, also threatened through Palmer, whose curling effort was tipped to safety by Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Spurs suffered a setback early in the second half when James Maddison, making only his second start in 18 months, was forced off with an injury.
However, the visitors maintained their pressure and took the lead through Penders’ costly error with 13 minutes remaining.
Chelsea’s hopes of recovering suffered another blow three minutes later when Palmer received a second yellow card, resulting in the first dismissal of his career and leaving the hosts with 10 men.
Tottenham capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Mathys Tel sealing the victory three minutes from time after a superb solo run and finish.
The result handed De Zerbi’s men a second consecutive victory, lifting them to 12th place in the Premier League standings. It also marked Tottenham’s first win at Stamford Bridge since 2018.
Chelsea remain fourth, five points ahead of Spurs, despite the defeat.
The Blues will visit Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before hosting Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Tottenham, meanwhile, will welcome Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.
