President Bola Tinubu has promised that Nigerians will begin to pay less for transportation from October 2026 under the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga said the initiative followed a meeting between Tinubu and the governors of the 36 states on August 27, where they agreed on measures aimed at reducing transportation costs.

“On August 27, I met with the governors of our 36 states, and we agreed on a clear objective. From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” the statement quoted Tinubu as saying.

The President said an implementation committee had subsequently been established for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as chairman.

Tinubu said considerable work was already underway involving the committee, PI-CNG & EV, state governments and other stakeholders to identify priority transport corridors, determine appropriate interventions and put the necessary arrangements in place.

“This work has become even more urgent amid the current global energy crisis,” he said.
