Team Nigeria concluded a successful campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, finishing seventh on the final medals table with 24 medals to emerge as Africa’s highest-ranked nation.

Nigeria secured a total of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, earning a place among the competition’s top 10 nations.

According to the final standings released by the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games organisers on Sunday, Australia topped the medals table with 171 medals, while England and Canada finished second and third respectively.

Nigeria’s campaign got off to a winning start through Esther Nworgu, who claimed the country’s first gold medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.

Other notable performances came from Ezekiel Nathaniel, who won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles; Goodness Nwachukwu, who shattered her own world record to claim the women’s F42 discus title; Idris Riluwan, who triumphed in the men’s para powerlifting event; and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who made history by winning gold in the men’s shot put.

World record holder Tobi Amusan also added to Nigeria’s medal tally, overcoming injury to secure bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Australia finished the Games with 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze medals for a total of 171, while England claimed second place with 110 medals and Canada finished third with 62.

India and hosts Scotland completed the top five after both finished with 39 medals, although India ranked higher due to a superior silver medal count.

New Zealand placed sixth with 36 medals, just ahead of Nigeria, whose haul of 10 gold medals ensured it finished above every other African nation.

Jamaica ended the Games in eighth position, followed by Wales in ninth, while Malaysia rounded out the top 10.

Among the other African countries, South Africa finished 11th with 28 medals, Kenya placed 13th with 12 medals, while Cyprus, Mauritius and Cameroon occupied 14th, 15th and 16th places respectively. Uganda, Namibia, Ghana, Lesotho, Zambia and Gabon also featured on the medals table, but none matched Nigeria’s overall performance.
