Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja and nine fellow climbers have died after an avalanche struck their expedition on Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest mountains, expedition organizers confirmed.

“It is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal ‘Nimsdai’ Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak,” his company, Elite Expeditions, said in a statement.

The company added that all other members of the expedition also lost their lives in the disaster.

“We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive,” the statement said.

Broad Peak, located in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range, rises 8,051 meters (26,414 feet) above sea level and is considered one of the world’s most challenging peaks for high-altitude climbers.

Purja, 43, earned international acclaim for redefining the limits of mountaineering.

In 2019, he made history by becoming the first person to summit all 14 of the world’s mountains higher than 8,000 meters in just six months and six days—a feat widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in modern climbing.

His remarkable accomplishment was chronicled in the 2021 Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.

Before becoming a professional mountaineer, Purja served for a decade in the United Kingdom’s Special Boat Service (SBS), one of Britain’s elite special forces units, often compared to the U.S. Navy SEALs.

His achievements inspired climbers around the world and helped raise the profile of Himalayan mountaineering through a combination of speed, endurance and rescue missions carried out on some of the planet’s most dangerous peaks.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the avalanche, which ranks among the deadliest mountaineering disasters in the Karakoram in recent years.
