The Ministry of Power has sought the support of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to strengthen the protection of critical electricity infrastructure as part of ongoing efforts to reform the nation’s power sector.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Rilwan Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He was accompanied by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary and other members of its management team.

Tegbe commended the performance of the Nigeria Police Force under the current administration, particularly since the appointment of IGP Disu, and stressed the need for closer collaboration to address security threats facing the power sector.

He identified the vandalism of electricity infrastructure as one of the major obstacles to improving power supply, calling for enhanced surveillance of critical installations and sustained cooperation between the Ministry and the Police.

Responding, IGP Disu thanked the Minister for the visit and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure, including power facilities, to strengthen the country’s energy security.

The Police chief also pledged to ensure the prosecution of vandals and other individuals involved in attacks on electricity infrastructure.

Disu further expressed the Force’s readiness to collaborate with the Ministry in establishing a dedicated task force to safeguard power installations, assuring the Minister of the Police’s full support in protecting the sector’s assets and personnel, which have frequently come under attack.

According to the Ministry, the meeting reflects the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to improve the reliability of electricity supply through stronger inter-agency collaboration in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
