Tinubu Grants Customs CG Adeniyi Six-Month Extension

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.

The extension was disclosed in a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who noted that the additional six months will be Adeniyi’s final tenure extension.

According to the Presidency, the extension is intended to allow Adeniyi consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and facilitate an orderly leadership transition within the Customs Service.

Adeniyi’s previous tenure extension was due to expire on August 1, 2026. With the latest approval, he is expected to remain in office until February 2027.

The Presidency stated that during the transition period, Adeniyi will work with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure the compulsory retirement of officers who have either reached the age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.

The government said the arrangement is aimed at strengthening succession planning and maintaining stability within the service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and steadily rose through the ranks.

His career progression saw him become Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. He was appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

The latest extension underscores the administration’s confidence in his leadership as the Customs Service continues reforms aimed at improving trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border management.
