NDC Kicks Off Nationwide Primaries Ahead of 2027 Showdown

The Nigeria Democratic Congress is set to conduct its Presidential, National Assembly, Governorship, and State Assembly primaries nationwide today, with most outcomes expected to be concluded through affirmation and delegate processes.

According to a joint statement by the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, and National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu, the exercise was rescheduled due to disruptions caused by the Eid-el-Kabir public holidays, which affected logistics and transportation.

The party confirmed that its presidential candidate, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election, will be officially affirmed as the NDC’s flagbearer by delegates across the states.

The statement explained that while the presidential primary will be conducted by affirmation, other positions—including National Assembly, State Assembly, and governorship tickets—will involve both voting and affirmation processes.

Party officials further stated that all results from the exercises will be collated and forwarded to the National Headquarters, where the National Working Committee will announce the final outcomes.

It also warned that no state executive or committee is authorised to announce results independently.

In preparation for the primaries, the NDC released a comprehensive list of electoral committee members tasked with overseeing the process across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The committees are spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with designated chairpersons and secretaries assigned to each state to supervise the conduct of the primaries and ensure compliance with party guidelines.

Party sources indicated that most Senate and House of Representatives aspirants are also expected to emerge through affirmation by delegates across the states.

The development marks a major step in the NDC’s internal preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the party moves to finalise its candidates at all levels of government.
