Debut Hero Azeez Powers Super Eagles Into Unity Cup Final

Nigeria national football team produced a dominant display on Tuesday night, defeating Zimbabwe national football team 2-0 at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley Stadium to qualify for the final of the 2026 Unity Cup.

Femi Azeez was the star of the night, scoring twice on his senior international debut to hand Nigeria victory in the semi-final clash.

The Millwall FC forward opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a stunning long-range strike after being set up by Terem Moffi.

Azeez added his second goal in the 63rd minute, again assisted by Moffi, to seal Nigeria’s place in the final and maintain the Super Eagles’ perfect record in the Unity Cup competition.

The encounter renewed the recent rivalry between both nations following their two 1-1 draws during the CAF World Cup qualifying campaign. Zimbabwe had frustrated Nigeria in previous meetings, but the Super Eagles responded strongly this time around.

Coach Eric Chelle fielded a largely unfamiliar squad as he used the tournament to test new players ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defender Chibueze Oputa and Azeez all earned their first senior caps for Nigeria.

Nigeria’s defence, marshalled by Chibuike Nwaiwu, Igoh Ogbu, Oputa and Igboke, successfully kept Zimbabwe at bay throughout the match.

Several regular stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi, were absent from the squad.

Chelle also introduced substitutes Rafiu Durosinmi, Tosin Oyedokun, Owen Oseni and Aderemi Adeoye during the second half as Nigeria comfortably saw out the victory.

The Super Eagles will now face either Jamaica national football team or India national football team in Saturday’s final at The Valley.
